Why It’s a Staff Pick: “The Frozen Ground” is surefire proof that no matter how many cliches are present, a movie such as this can still be good. I was counting the cliches literally as they passed, but i’m willing to forgive and forget all of them for three very good reasons – #1: Nicolas Cage’s excellent performance welcomed him back to top form, I really believed the trappings of his character and he was far from over-the-top. #2: The breathtaking Alaskan scenery is further enhanced by Scott Walker’s steady-handed direction and the beautifully shot cinematography. #3: The movie packed this genuine quiet intensity to it. No matter how many cliches there were, this movie had a certain aura of intensity not always present in modern films of its ilk. “The Frozen Ground” makes my list for its intensity, beautiful cinematography, terrific performances from Cage and John Cusack, and for the fact that I wasn’t bored watching this movie for one single second. Not one of the best films of last year, but it is certainly better, in my opinion, than some of the reviews it received.
