This Is The End (2013) Review

Despite an entertaining cast, I was very very weary about seeing this movie at first. I thought it’d be a long, drawn-out generic cliche-ridden unfunny mess, but I was beyond surprised when it turned out to be one of the finest films of 2013. Infact, the only thing generic about “This Is The End” is the title.

PLOT: While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

“This Is The End” does not infact start off too funny, there are some witty barbs thrown here and there, but soon enough as the plot moves further and further the film becomes funnier and funnier until I was literally laughing so hard my chest hurt. The jokes are extremely clever, with each member of the cast hurling insults at another based on each other’s acting careers. Of course raunch was expected, but this time off the raunchiness was actually quite funny instead of boring and random.

The plot of the movie was actually quite original, despite somewhat simply structured, and the screenplay was very well written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. Again, great dialogue that was genuinely funny, and some excellent character development. The direction, also by Evan Goldberg, was brilliantly done, and had absolutely wonderful special effects laced throughout.

The ensemble cast however is simply what made this movie work so perfectly: Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, and many guest stars here and there all played off of each other’s movie character personas to create some genuinely hilarious moments. And the performances were well done, too.

In conclusion, while the comedy in “This Is The End” started off a little slow, it built up quite fast and the jokes, witty barbs, and sight gags were thrown so furious about that I was literally choking with laughter. It’s lighthearted, wonderfully absurd and fantastically original, and the entire ensemble cast played off of each other brilliantly. I urge everyone to see this movie, believe the hype. It is absolutely worth it.

MY RATING: 9.5/10

Solid review. It’s a fun movie that loves using all of the blood and gore they can, but there is a lot left to be desired in terms of story and scares.
